Description This shoe translates the presence and potential of an octopus into a sculptural wearable object. Its enveloping form suggests a body in readiness, coiled around the foot as if anticipating change rather than fully undergoing it.
The design marks the beginning of a larger exploration of metamorphosis. It captures a state of becoming, reflecting the idea that octopuses are never fixed but continuously in transition. This biological condition is echoed in their ability to adapt through RNA editing, enabling constant variation and responsiveness.
Within this framework, the piece holds tension between stability and possibility, proposing footwear not as a static object, but as an expression of ongoing change.
Innovation The innovation of this design lies in the fusion of biomimicry, digital fabrication, and traditional craftsmanship. Inspired by the anatomy of an octopus, biological principles are translated into both formal and functional elements. The sole is developed through 3D modeling and additive manufacturing, allowing complex organic structures to be shaped with a high level of precision.
A key innovative element is the integration of rounded protrusions derived from octopus suckers, which are not only visually referential but also contribute to traction. In contrast to the digitally fabricated sole, the upper is realized through skilled leatherworking, detailed construction, and hand-applied color treatment.
By combining advanced modeling and 3D printing with artisanal making techniques, the project proposes a hybrid design approach in which technology and craftsmanship enhance one another.
Product Detail The sole is digitally modeled in Blender and 3D printed in PLA (Formfutura). Its organic shape is inspired by the mantle of an octopus, resulting in a flowing, sculptural form. The underside features rounded protrusions referencing octopus suckers, which function as a distinctive tread and provide grip.
The upper is crafted from leather and hand-treated with acrylic paint. This process creates an irregular, organic pattern inspired by the chromatophore skin of an octopus, allowing for subtle tonal variations. This surface captures the idea of transformation through subtle tonal shifts.
Structurally, the upper wraps around the foot in overlapping segments, echoing the movement and adaptability of octopus arms. The combination of the sculptural 3D-printed sole and the expressive leather upper creates a dialogue between structure and fluidity.
Specification This design is developed as a unisex prototype. It currently exists as a single sample, without size grading or standardized variations.
As a prototype, no fixed color variations are defined; the appearance results from the manual painting process in orange acrylic, making each piece inherently unique.
The approximate weight and dimensions correspond to a wearable object, while precise specifications remain part of ongoing development.
