Description
The concept behind Rift TR-1 was born from a question: what does discipline look like when the environment fights back? This project explores the intersection of rugged terrain, mental resilience, and design built for performance outside the spotlight. Rather than focusing solely on aesthetics or trend, Rift TR-1 was designed as a single product solution for athletes and individuals training off-grid where predictability doesn’t exist, and equipment must adapt. Built around a real-world Vibram® Spiderlock outsole, the shoe was reverse-engineered to meet the constraints of existing commercial tooling. From there, the upper was mapped with recycled mesh, structured TPU, and targeted padding to reduce waste while increasing support. All design decisions were driven by functionality, repairability, and clarity of use from terrain-specific micro-lug patterns to stitch placement. The result is a fully tech-packed footwear concept that reflects the mindset of those who train in the shadows and thrive in discomfort, a product forged from failure, but built to endure.

Innovation
Rift TR-1 explores innovation through materials rather than reinvented tooling. The upper construction integrates graphene-infused textiles in high-abrasion zones and flex points, providing lightweight durability where it's needed most. A stretchable ePTFE membrane forms the internal bootie and collar wrap, offering breathability and water resistance without sacrificing comfort. Targeted aerogel composite inserts in the toe, midfoot, and heel add insulation without bulk ideal for colder trail conditions. The Vibram Spiderlock outsole was selected as a proven platform to support this material-driven
approach.

Product Detail
The materials used throughout Rift TR-1 include recycled polyester spacer mesh, ripstop textile, thermoformable toe puff, bonded microsuede, open cell foam, Lycra lining, injection-molded TPU overlays, and a Vibram Spiderlock rubber outsole. Stitching, bonding, and molded construction methods were selected to balance durability with repairability.

Specification
Rift TR-1 was developed on a US men’s size 9 last and designed for unisex sizing. The concept features the Shadowcast colorway: graphite black, industrial charcoal, weathered steel, scorched brown, and red accents. Tooling is based on the Vibram Spiderlock outsole.
