Description
The goal of my graduate project, TENEBRIS, was to explore the overlooked space of footwear designed for the gym, specifically how athletes today blur the line between performance and lifestyle. Too often, gym shoes are split between two extremes: technical but uninspired performance trainers, or stylish sneakers with little functional value. TENEBRIS set out to bridge this gap. The collection is built around the Velaris System, a compression framework inspired by kinesiology taping, designed to stabilize the foot while adapting to different phases of training. Organized into three tiers: Foundation, Focus, and Flux - the line mirrors the athlete’s own progression, from building strength and consistency, to balancing performance with self-expression, to pushing into innovation and identity. Throughout the process, I combined market research, consumer insights, CMF exploration, sketch development, and high-fidelity rendering to design not just footwear, but a system and a brand world. My hope is that TENEBRIS can demonstrate how gym footwear can move beyond a binary of “fashion or function,” into something more unified where performance and identity coexist.

Innovation
The innovation at the core of TENEBRIS is the Velaris System, a three-zone compression framework inspired by kinesiology taping. Unlike traditional gym footwear, which provides static support, Velaris adapts to the athlete by mapping stability and containment directly to high-pressure performance zones. The Heel Cradle locks the rearfoot during heavy lifts, the Midfoot Band reduces lateral roll, and the Metatarsal Grid Wrap enhances toe splay and balance. Each tier of the collection integrates Velaris differently. Foundation uses the Heel Cradle alone, Focus combines Heel + Midfoot, and Flux employs the full system. This creates a scalable innovation that evolves with the athlete’s training progression, rather than a one-size-fits-all solution.

Product Detail
The materials within TENEBRIS balance durability, containment, and lifestyle appeal. Uppers use engineered knit mesh for breathability, reinforced with TPU overlays for midfoot stability. Suede and nubuck panels provide structure and abrasion resistance. The Velaris System integrates through layered zones: a Heel Cradle with reinforced foam, a Midfoot Band of elasticized TPU, and a Metatarsal Grid Wrap using knit tension mapping. Tooling combines lightweight EVA midsoles with recycled rubber outsoles for stability and traction. Finishes include matte coatings, reflective accents, and iridescent films applied sparingly to highlight motion.

Specification
The TENEBRIS collection was developed on a men’s US size 9 last, chosen for consistency across prototyping and rendering. While currently only conceptual, the intention is for the line to span a full men’s and women’s size run, with tier-specific adjustments to fit and proportion. Each model varies slightly in weight based on construction, with the Foundation tier designed for durability and heavier support, Focus for balanced crossover performance, and Flux for lightweight innovation.
