Description
The PUMA “Switch Mode” project is a forward-thinking sneaker concept that explores how modularity and customization can redefine the relationship between people and their footwear. Designed in collaboration with my team, the shoe blends a sleek, lightweight base silhouette with interchangeable components that empower users to adapt both style and function. The detachable sole extension allows the sneaker to shift seamlessly from minimal, everyday wear to a bold, statement piece, while customizable elements such as laces, straps, and charms offer endless possibilities for personal expression. Rooted in sustainability, the design incorporates recycled mesh, plant-based foams, and modular construction to extend product life and reduce waste. Inspired by global sneaker culture and tailored to emerging markets, this project reflects how design can meet diverse cultural identities while embracing circularity. More than just footwear, “Switch Mode” is an adaptive platform that encourages creativity, individuality, and responsible consumption.

Innovation
This design redefines sneaker customization by introducing a modular system that merges performance with self-expression. Unlike conventional footwear, our concept features a detachable sole extension that allows the wearer to switch between modes — lightweight everyday wear or enhanced, statement-driven styling. The innovation lies not only in the functional transformation but also in the cultural flexibility: charms, interchangeable laces, and color accents let individuals adapt their shoes to reflect personal identity, local trends, and occasions. The construction emphasizes circularity, with components designed for easy replacement or recycling, extending the lifecycle of the product. By combining sustainable materials, modular assembly, and expressive customization, the sneaker bridges fashion and function while responding to the needs of emerging markets where individuality and adaptability are highly valued. It transforms footwear from a static product into a dynamic platform for creativity, performance, and responsible design.

Our design for the PUMA “Switch Mode” project explores modularity, customization, and sustainability through carefully selected materials and innovative construction. The upper combines lightweight recycled mesh with premium synthetic overlays, balancing breathability, durability, and style. A detachable sole extension, developed with EVA and TPU, provides both cushioning and structure, allowing wearers to adapt the shoe to different environments and aesthetics. Decorative elements such as interchangeable laces, charms, and colored straps enhance personalization, while the core body maintains a streamlined form for comfort and versatility. The insole features plant-based foam for reduced environmental impact, and the midsole integrates a dual-density system that merges flexibility with long-lasting support. Each component is designed for easy assembly and disassembly, reducing waste and extending product life. The overall structure creates a sneaker that is modular, expressive, and adaptable to diverse cultural trends in emerging markets.

Specification
The sneaker is available in unisex sizing (EU 35–46 / US 4–13), designed to fit both men and women with adaptable proportions. Weight is kept ultra-light at approximately 280g per shoe, thanks to the modular sole extension and breathable mesh upper. Core colorways include versatile neutrals (black, white, sand) as a base, with customizable add-ons such as bright laces, sole extensions, and charms in seasonal colors. The interchangeable system allows wearers to mix and match elements, creating endless variations while maintaining comfort and durability.
